FREEVIEW FACTS 2008
The switch to digital TV is progressing at a rapid pace and 86.7% of UK households now receive digital TV on their main TV set. A lot of this is due to the rapid growth of Freeview to become the UK's biggest TV platform. Here's some more things you may not know about Freeview and the switch to digital TV:
- 9.6 million: the number of households that have Freeview on their main TV set (an increase of 1.9 million in a year)
- 15.3 million: the total number of households using Freeview on a main or secondary TV set
- 3.2 million: the estimated number of households still to switch to digital TV. Check when your region switches to digital.
- 27 million: total sales of Freeview products since Freeview’s launch in 2002

- 300,000: the number of Freeview Playback digital TV recorders sold since launch last year - making it easy to pause, record and rewind live TV for free
- 30 million: that's the number of analogue recording devices in the UK so if you are looking to go digital and get all the recording benefits of a VCR (plus much, much more), a digital TV recorder could be just the ticket.
- 2.4: the number of TV sets in the average home. Watching TV is no longer just confined to the living room. Freeview gives you even more great reasons to enjoy digital TV in the bedroom or the kitchen.
- 25%: according to a recent report,* nearly a quarter of the people living in the UK wrongly thought you needed a new TV to go digital when in fact it can be as simple as a one off cost for a digital box or a digital TV recorder.
- 20+: the number of new channels added to our free channel line-up since launch, taking us to over 40 (including Dave, Virgin 1, Nuts TV and National Lottery Xtra in the last year alone). Download the Freeview channel guide (PDF, 1.5 MB) to see the full line up.
- 1 million tonnes: the amount of waste created in the UK each year from electrical goods - enough to fill 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools. If you are replacing an old TV or VCR, look into recycling or safe disposal as outlined on the Recycle Now website.
