Can I get subtitles?

You can get subtitles with most digital boxes and TVs. Check the instructions that come with your digital box to find out how to turn them on.

Most television programmes are subtitled. At present:

  • ITV subtitles over 91% of its programmes
  • Channel 4 subtitles over 89% of its programmes
  • Channel 5 subtitles over 78% of its programmes
  • S4C subtitles over 76% of its programmes
  • The BBC is committed to subtitling 100% of all programmes. This commitment covers the folllowing channels:

    • BBC One
    • BBC Two
    • BBC Three
    • BBC Four
    • BBC News
    • CBeebies
    • The CBBC Channel.

BBC Parliament is also increasing its subtitling. The 2003 Communication Act has set a legal framework for subtitling requirements and the regulator Ofcom stipulates what each channel must do. For example, ITV1 and Channel 4 must subtitle 90% of programmes by 2010.

For more information on subtitling please call the RNID on 0808 808 0123 or visit the website at http://www.rnid.org.uk/.
