Can I watch Freeview on my computer?

Most computers can receive Freeview provided they have a DVB-T tuner or receiver (Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial) either fitted internally or externally via a USB device. In simple terms the tuner acts in the same way as a digital box, picking up the television signals from the aerial and converting them into television pictures which the software on your computer is able to display. To view a Freeview channel on your PC you must be in a Freeview coverage area and have a strong enough signal from the aerial.

If you have this facility on your computer the manual for the DVB-T receiver will describe everything that your software will allow you to do.

Most DVB-T receivers, whether for a laptop or PC, come with some sort of aerial (see diagram below) which is attached to either the USB ‘dongle’ for a laptop or card for the desktop PC. It is possible to have a feed to these from an outside aerial or set top aerial, but you will need to check the connection.

Note that at present interactive services on Freeview will not work on your computer.
