Freeview for campers, caravanners and motor home owners.

There are a number of options available to both caravan and motor home owners.

The most flexible system is where you simply attach a terrestrial aerial and align it with the transmission mast manually. There are various externally mounted aerials for caravans or portable aerials that may work where there is a strong signal. Check the coverage for the site you plan to visit before setting out.

Unless the television you are using has a built in decoder you will also need a Freeview digital box in order to convert an analogue signal from a terrestrial source to digital.

Many caravan parks have installed terrestrial TV ‘pick up’ points integrating them within the sites electric ‘hook-up’ points. So all you have to do is run an aerial cable from your TV to the TV post and hey presto within a matter of moments you can be watching your favourite programme.

Two other things to bear in mind. Most caravans are limited to 10amps by their own fusing system. You will need to consider what other electrical equipment is being operated at the same time on the same circuit as your television. If the refrigerator and water heater are being operated at the same time as a microwave and TV, this could be enough to overload the circuit.

If you are going to run your TV off your leisure battery then you will need to consider the type of TV and how much power it will be drawing down. Again there is a wide choice of TV’s available including 12v/240v models. Remember you may also need a power inverter in order to convert 12 volts to 240 volts to run your TV off your leisure battery so talk to the experts who are best able to provide advice on what systems are most appropriate.

We recommend that you check the coverage at your intended destination here and phone the campsite before your arrival for more information on their digital TV provision.
