Can I watch Freeview using a portable set-top aerial?

Some, but only a few, homes may be able to use a set top aerial. However, for a much better reception, we strongly recommend you use a rooftop aerial.

If you do not have access to a rooftop aerial - for example, if you rent a flat and the aerial is the responsibility of your landlord, or if you're using a second TV in the bedroom and don't want the hassle and expense of extension cables - a set-top aerial may be your only option.

Ricability, an independent research charity, has tested a number of set-top aerials.

What type of aerial do I need?

If you are installing a new aerial, we recommend a wideband rooftop aerial rather than a loft aerial. Loft aerials generally receive a weaker digital signal and are more likely to get interference from other electrical equipment in the home. We suggest you have an aerial survey done before getting an aerial upgrade.

Talk to your retailer or get in touch with the following organisations who can give you details of one or more members who operate in your area and guarantee their work:

A local installer will understand the circumstances and local geography in your area and suggest the best option available to you.
