Freeview Sets World Record with Dog-friendly Corgi Wedding Cake!

Posted April 15, 2011 - Press Releases

Freeview celebrates the Royal Wedding by unveiling a giant corgi wedding cake and setting a new Guinness World Record.

Freeview unveils record breaking Corgi cake at  London’s Tower Bridge

This morning, to the delight of dogs and their walkers, Freeview ramped up their Royal Wedding celebrations underneath the iconic back-drop of London’s Tower Bridge, with the unveiling of a giant dog wedding cake, setting a new Guinness World Record.

Created to celebrate the fact that Freeview HD will offer the most detailed window to the Royal Wedding from the comfort of people’s living rooms, the cake was given the seal of approval by a Guinness World Records Adjudicator, officially making it the World’s Largest Canine Cake.

Commuters stopped and stared as the cake was unveiled and sampled by a trio of corgis, before pieces were handed out to excited passing dogs keen to get a bite of the action. Freeview’s corgi stars, who can be seen embarking on an epic journey in the new TV advert, are acting royalty in their own right, having starred in Oscar-winning films The King’s Speech and The Queen.

Created by award-winning cake designer Michelle Wibowo, the huge 6 ft high tiered structure weighed 68kg, was topped with a giant replica corgi, instead of the traditional bride and groom figurines, and cut an imposing figure on the banks of the Thames this morning.

Michelle worked for 111 hours solid over a period of three weeks  to construct every detail of the cake which measured nearly six foot long, over four foot high and over three feet wide (70” x 52” x 40”). The intricate details of the corgi’s fur took the longest to do with Michelle spending 16 consecutive hours crafting the intricate details. The dog-friendly recipe included canine-favourites such as; liver dog food, chicken and beef steak.

The record breaking weight was 68 kilograms which was achieved using a whopping:

  • 20kg of liver dog food (including dried liver, chicken and beef steak)
  • 25 cloves of garlic
  • 30kg of wholemeal flour
  • Fish oil
  • 120 eggs

Freeview Managing Director Ilse Howling said:  “The Royal Wedding is set to become the most watched television event in high definition since British broadcasting began.  So, as the nation prepares their own celebrations, we wanted to mark the two week countdown with a record-breaking wedding cake fit for man’s best friend to enjoy whilst watching every detail of the Royal Wedding on Freeview HD.”

After being enjoyed by the corgis the cake will be delivered to Battersea Dogs Home.

Freeview HD offers the ultimate Royal Wedding TV viewing experience, providing every detail – from the crowds and the vows to the guests and the flowers – in crisp, clear high definition.  Whether staying at home to watch the celebrations or joining one of the many street parties, a Freeview+ HD recorder will record, store and replay the wedding so the ‘I Do’ moment can be enjoyed time and time again; all without a subscription fee or contract.

Freeview HD is already available to around 70% of the UK – an additional two million homes will be able to receive Freeview HD in time for the Royal Wedding on the 29th April 2011.  By the end of next year, Freeview HD coverage will roll out to the whole country (98.5%).
