Recent months have been great for brand-new TV series, but what about those returning for a new season? Sci-Fi, reality, comedy, drama and more are all on the cards from the likes of BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Keep reading to find out when you should expect your favourite shows to return.

Vigil, BBC iPlayer

From the makers of Line of Duty, the first series of Vigil treated us to all the twists and turns we love from a prime-time BBC drama, with the unexpected difference of it being set on a submarine. In the second series, DCI Silva, played by Suranne Jones makes her return, this time swapping the ocean for the sky as she tackles drone warfare.

Doctor Who, BBC iPlayer

One of the most eagerly anticipated TV releases of the year, Doctor Who is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary with 3 hour-long episodes as David Tennant embarks on his final adventures as the Doctor. If this wasn’t enough, we’ve also got a festive special to look forward to this Christmas, starring brand-new doctor Ncuti Gatwa of Sex Education fame.

The Traitors, BBC iPlayer

A break-out show of 2022, The Traitors returns with a new series as 22 strangers head back to the castle for a chance to win 120K. Claudia Winkleman is also back hosting the ultimate reality game of trust and treachery as the mind games begin once more.

The Tourist, BBC iPlayer

Season 2 of The Tourist sees Jamie Dornan relocate from the Australian outback to the rugged landscape of Ireland. Alongside a raft of new characters, Elliot and police officer Helen Chambers try to uncover his past amidst a long-standing family feud.

Sherwood, BBC iPlayer

A divided police force, a relentless manhunt and a killer tormenting an already fractured Nottinghamshire community were at the heart of the first series of this gritty drama chronicling one of Britain’s largest manhunts. Series 2 will see the return of David Morrissey as DCS Ian St Clair and picks up on the same themes of fractured communities and political turmoil.

Hullraisers, Channel 4   

It’s not just dramas returning for new seasons. For something a little more light-hearted, join the women from Hull in the second season of this must watch Channel 4 comedy. Toni, Rana and Paula deal with a fresh batch of chaos, from pregnancy and menopause to DIY, via strippergrams and buttock-cupping.

Everyone Else Burns, Channel 4

Another hit Channel 4 comedy making its way back to our screens is Everyone Else Burns. While we might have a while to waiy for this one, we can be sure it will be another series filled with antics of the Lewises: your average, everyday Manchester family who belong to an ultra-religious order.

Big Boys, Channel 4

Jack Rooke's comedy about two mismatched boys who strike up an unlikely friendship when they're thrown together at university was a hit in 2022, and hopefully we don’t have to wait for too much longer until season 2 is released. Heading into his second year of university, it will follow Jack as contends with the difficulties of university life alongside grief from his father’s passing.
