A new year means another 12 months of great TV, and while some of your favourite shows may well be making an appearance, it’s also worth keeping an eye on what’s new. From reality shows to gripping dramas and bingeable comedy box sets, you might just find your next TV obsession.

Big Boys series 2, Channel 4

Jack Rooke's comedy about two mismatched boys who strike up an unlikely friendship when they're thrown together at university was a hit in 2022, and fans will be happy to know it’s set to return in January 2024. The second series will see the gang take on their second year of university, all while Jack’s family continue to move forward with life without his Dad.

The Tourist series 2, BBC iPlayer

After a series packed with twists and turns set in Australia, Jamie Dornan reprises the role of Elliot, but this time in Ireland. Expect kidnapping, family feuds and plenty of new characters as The Tourist kicks off 2024 in dramatic style.

Trigger Point series 2, ITVX

Another thriller we’ve all been patiently waiting to return is ITV’s Trigger Point. With a top cast including Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure and The Undeclared War’s Adrian Lester, series 1 followed the story of Explosives Officers Lana Washington and Joel Nutkins as they investigated a potential bomb factory in a London housing estate. While we don’t know much about series 2, we can be sure it will involve even more nail biting action.

Suspect series 2, Channel 4

Not one to miss out on the action, Channel 4 will also be gracing our screens with a returning drama in 2024. First showing in 2022, this psychological drama starred James Nesbitt, Joely Richardson, Ben Miller and Richard E. Grant and followed a veteran detective on an agonising mission to uncover the truth about his daughter's death. The second series of Suspect sees even more stars join the cast as Dr Susannah Newman, played by Anne-Marie Duff, hunts down a self-confessed serial killer.

Nightsleeper, BBC iPlayer

2024 isn’t just about returning shows, as we are set to see plenty of brand-new thrillers, dramas and comedies make their debut. One such show to look out for is Nightsleeper, a 6-part real-time thriller set on a sleeper train from Glasgow to London. As events on board escalate, two strangers must work together to save the lives of the other passengers.

Passenger, ITVX

If you’re after drama with a more comic edge, ITV’s Passenger is a dark thriller due to arrive in 2024. Set in the small northern village of Chadder Vale, a close-knit community is sent spinning on its axis following a series of strange and unnatural crimes which ex-Met Detective Riya Ajunwa sets about investigating to help her feel alive again.

Big Mood, Channel 4

For those who prefer comedy without too many dark twists, Channel 4’s Big Mood won’t disappoint. Fans of Derry Girls and It’s A Sin will recognise Lydia West and Nicola Coughlan as they come together as best friends Maggie and Eddie. Having weathered ten years of ups and downs, they begin to question whether their friendship is in their best interests.
