Is Freeview free?

TV

At Freeview, we believe everyone has the right to watch great TV for free. So all the channels are free, there’s no contract and only a one-off payment for the equipment.

What channels do I get?

With Freeview, you can get 70 TV channels and more than 30 radio stations, all with no subscription. And with a Freeview HD TV or recorder you can also watch up to 15 HD channels.

The exact number of channels you'll get depends on the coverage at your address. Use our Freeview Checker to find out the ones available to you.

Get even more with Freeview Play

Freeview Play lets you watch even more – with more than 20,000 hours of free on-demand content and catch-up TV from the likes of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, UKTV Play and CBS.

On all Freeview Play devices, you can scroll backwards through the TV Guide and choose a programme to catch up on.

Streaming services from Freeview

With Freeview, you get a range of free streaming channels from different providers, including specialist and foreign language channels and global news services. These are available on channels 225-250 from your TV Guide.

When you’re watching a BBC channel, if you press the red button on your remote, Red Button+ gives you TV highlights, news, sport, children’s TV, weather forecasts and the lottery results.

The Freeview Play apps page gives you extra services like BBC Sport and BBC News.

Can I subscribe to other paid streaming services through Freeview?

Of course, you can still pay for extra subscription channels available from other companies in addition to Freeview if you want to. You’ll need the right equipment to receive their channels and services (but you’ll still get Freeview for free).

What else do I need?

You’ll need a minimum broadband speed of 2 Mbps to watch catch-up and on-demand services – this will count towards any monthly broadband data allowance you have.

You'll also need a TV licence and an aerial that's in good condition.

APP

At Freeview, we believe everyone has the right to watch great TV for free. No contract, no monthly bill, no fuss.

The Freeview mobile app does just this, by giving you great free content via your mobile device. All you need on top is an internet connection and a TV licence.

Freeview app on Android and iOS

You can get the Freeview mobile app on phones and tablets running Android OS 4.4 KitKat or above, and on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and above.

Where do I get the app?

You can download the app onto your device from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Just search for Freeview and select the app of the same title. Then tap Get and the app will start downloading to your device straight away. Make sure you're connected to wi-fi or your data network to download the app.

In order to watch content, you'll also need to download the BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5 and UKTV Play apps, and have a TV licence.
