Ditch the flowers: our Mother’s Day meal plan

Posted March 13, 2015 - Blog Posts

We probably don’t need to tell you that Mother’s Day is just around the corner. You’ve already been assaulted in the card shops, asked to spend hundreds by the department stores and embarrassingly had to link arms with mum (at her request) who insists that, really, you don’t have to buy her anything this year.

Only we all know that you do need to do something to make her feel special. Your mum deserves to be treated. She washed your socks for years, looked after you when you were ill, and was a shoulder to cry on when you got dumped for the first time. And the second time. And the third.

Our favourite way of treating mum is by lovingly crafting some home-cooked treats for her. To help make it simple, we’ve rounded up some of TV’s best meals to help your Mother’s Day go perfectly.
We’re also giving you the chance to WIN a MasterChef book by entering our yummy competition. Tweet us @FreeviewTV with what you’re going to cook for Mother’s Day using #mumsrecipe before 11pm on Sunday. See the full terms and conditions here.

Elevenses (because breakfast time is sleeping time)

Start the day off with a special treat for mum – a cup of tea or coffee (we figured you didn’t need a recipe for those) and some extra special macaroons, courtesy of pâtissier Raymond Blanc.

Raymond Blanc appears alongside Kate Humble in new series Kew on a Plate, starting Monday at 9pm on BBC Two

Lunch

Something light and colourful for lunch. Halibut and chorizo, it is!

Why halibut? Well, after all those years of your mum telling you that there are plenty of fish in the sea, you’re showing her that you’ve listened. By putting one of those fish on her plate. John Torode shows us how it’s done:

Dinner

A special dinner for mum needs extra-special presentation. Sushi presents plenty of opportunities to dazzle (and it might take mum out of her comfort zone of bangers and mash). Just, er, maybe don’t take too much inspiration from this Come Dine With Me clip:

Come Dine With Me is on More4 and 4Seven daily

Dessert

If your mum has an appetite as big as ours, she’ll almost certainly have room for dessert. Where best to look for motherly inspiration? Two hairy northern chaps, of course…

The Hairy Bikers have the perfect recipe for a knock-your-socks-off Black Forest Gateau:

Over to you

This week, we’ve been asking you on Twitter about what you’re going to cook for your mum this Sunday. We’ve had some pretty tasty suggestions and if you don’t fancy any of our meals, how about trying some of these?
