Game On: The Best Game Shows on Freeview

Posted July 12, 2018 - Blog Posts,News and Blog

If you’re looking for an evening of good-old fashioned entertainment with loveable hosts, hilarious guests, and some big prize giveaways, then why not give these game shows a try.

Would I Lie to You?

Friday 13 July at 9pm

Rob Brydon hosts the comedy panel show which proves that deception really is an artform. Team captains Lee Mack and David Mitchell lead by example with their comical approach to bluffing, from David’s mock anger to Lee’s cheeky chappy style which makes even the most outlandish stories sound sort of believable.

Each week there’s also a handful of celeb guests – usually these are just cannon fodder for Brydon and co – but this Friday there are some genuinely funny folk, including comedian Sara Pascoe and Strictly host Claudia Winkleman.

Don’t Forget the Lyrics
Saturday 14 July at 7pm

Shane Richie hosts the show that’s a bit like competitive karaoke, with contestants competing to win £250,000 by singing the missing lyrics to songs. Don’t expect too much from the vocal performances (they’re always a little pitchy if you ask us). The show’s really about the contestants, and cheering on the Brians, the Daves, and the Sallys of this world whilst they sing live on national TV and hopefully win big.

Taskmaster: Champion of Champions
Sunday 15 July at 10pm

Greg Davies and sidekick Alex Horne act as ringmasters in the comedy game show which sees comedians compete to complete random, unusual or occasionally downright silly tasks. To add grandeur to proceedings, the tasks are always delivered in a wax seal, and have included emptying the bathtub in the quickest time and impressing the mayor of Chesham.

In this Champion of Champions episode, five of the shows winners have returned to compete against each other, including Josh Widdicombe, Katherine Ryan, Noel Fielding, Rob Beckett and Bob Mortimer.

The £100K Drop

Channel 4
Every weekday at 4pm

Davina McCall hosts the show where contestants must avoid giving wrong answers, or their cash prize will disappear through a trapdoor. However, what’s unique about this show is that contestants hedge their bets by placing cash on more than one answer, depending on how confident they’re feeling. If you’re a fan of Deal or No Deal, this could be right up your street.

The Chase
Every weekday at 5pm

Hosted by Bradley Walsh, this is one of ITV’s most successful daytime shows ever and has led to two National Television Awards (in 2016 and 2017). Each episode sees four contestants compete against a professional quizzer (aka The Chaser), whose job it is to eliminate them from the game.

Total Wipeout
16-17 July at 6pm, 18-19 July at 5:30pm, Friday 20 July at 6pm

Watch as foolhardy Brits travel to Argentina to compete in a physically demanding obstacle course. It’s enjoyable stuff as presenter Richard Hammond wryly introduces each contestant, and even more entertaining as they fall into the mud, slide off waterfalls, and smash into giant red balls. Basically, just the usual story of Brits abroad.
