Eye-opening tips for a better TV experience

Posted February 2, 2018 - Blog Posts,News and Blog,Uncategorized

From adjusting your TV settings to choosing the best soundbars, there are lots of ways to make your viewing experience better than ever.

So here are some handy tips for improving your enjoyment of watching TV!

It’s a setup!

If you’ve just bought a new TV, or even if you’ve had your existing one for a while, fine-tuning some changes to its setup could make a world of a difference to your viewing pleasure.

There’s a lot to consider, from making sure you have the right aerial and adjusting the brightness and contrast settings to positioning the TV in the best place. Luckily, there’s plenty of useful information available to guide you.

For example, the Living with Freeview section of our website offers some helpful guidance on setting up a Freeview TV, as well as pointers on aerials and reception and step-by-step instructions for retuning your equipment.

And this recent article from What Hi-Fi offers further helpful information on positioning your TV, connecting it to the internet and adjusting your TV’s settings to achieve the best picture.

Sound decisions

It’s great to watch your favourite shows in living colour and high definition. But if Phil and Sharon from EastEnders sound as if they’re arguing inside a biscuit tin, that’s surely going to detract from your enjoyment of a proper east-end barney.

Connecting to a dedicated speaker, a soundbar, a soundbase or even to your own hi-fi can make TV as much of a joy for your ears as for your eyes. Which is why you should take note of our advice on improving your TV sound.

And here’s some up-to-date info on the latest best buys on soundbars and soundbases, along with guidance on connecting your TV to a stereo system.

Dream streams

There are lots of streaming devices around, and most are super cheap and easy to use. But it’s worth thinking about the kind of services you want to watch before making your choice.

Here at Freeview, we’ve reviewed some of the best streaming devices around.

And for the very latest on streaming devices, check out this handy guide to the best media players of 2018.

Quality catch-up

One of the really great ways of enhancing your viewing experience is by accessing on-demand services via the Freeview Play platform.

More and more TVs now come with Freeview Play as standard (check out the Freeview Play product range here).

Freeview Play offers access to the major TV catch-up services in the UK: BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, Demand 5 and the UK TV Play app, which includes programmes from Dave, Yesterday, Really and Drama.

It’s all very impressive, but Freeview Play is working hard to make great TV even better. It’s already equipped to deal with 4K, and its latest specifications includes support for the broadcast-ready standard known as Hybrid Log Gamma (not a Star Trek character, but a high definition solution designed to deliver superior picture quality).
